The long weekend in July was a busy one for all football fans, with six additional games of football being played at Kevin Richards? Memorial Oval in Karratha.

Swans visit to Pilbara 2011.

Inspirational Swan Districts captain Josh Roberts made a strong return from his wrist injury for the annual North West WAFL game, but in the end, East Fremantle proved too strong for the black-and-whites.

Swans visit to Pilbara 2011.On Friday night, an inaugural Women?s Game was played, with representatives from Hedland taking on the Karratha women, assisted by their captains and state representatives, Rikki Ryder and Chelsea Randall. Success went the way of the Karratha women, with the big game proving that demand is high for Women?s Football.? With this in mind, the Karratha team has continued to train, and aim to take on Hedland in two additional rematches prior to the end of the year.

Following this exciting game, some older gentleman with young-at-heart spirits took to the field for the Masters and Vets game, with Scott Cummings, Brendon Fester and Adam Hunter providing some support and entertainment.Swans visit to Pilbara 2011.

With Hedland once again taking on Karratha, there were plenty of sore hamstrings, memories of the good ol? days and slightly exaggerated stories being shared for the rest of the evening. The Masters? players are now looking at becoming affiliated with AFL Masters WA, proof that you?re never too old to enjoy a game of football.

Saturday proved to the big day of competition, with two Pilbara Development Squads commencing the days? games by playing in front of talent scouts.? Selected from throughout the Pilbara, all players showcased their skills and talent, identifying that the Pilbara region as one of the high ranking recruitment zones.

Swans visit to Pilbara 2011.In one of the most anticipated matches of the day, the South African International representative team played a newly created Pilbara 21?s team.? The infectious enthusiasm from the visiting country?s team pleased spectators and players alike, with both teams showing strong skills and talent. The South African team were in Australia for the AFL International Cup, so the opportunity for regional WA to experience this level of talent could not be missed.

Following the conclusion of the WAFL game, the North West Representative team took on the Perth Hills team, with local league talent on full display. With the Perth team being flown to Karratha specifically for this game, the match was full of anticipation.? The score belied the talent on the field, with the North Pilbara side finishing more than 10 goals in the lead.

Sunday saw community sessions at Wickham taking place, with members of the South African International team and the Swan Districts Football Club taking coaching sessions with local community members. The highlight was clearly the warm-up and cool-down taken by the South African team, proving that international borders, age and fitness are no barrier to enjoying any level of football.

On an overcast day of 19 degrees in the Pilbara, the community of Tom Price welcomed another cool change ? its new pool. The official opening by Irene, wife of the late Vic Hayton whom the pool has been named after, took place on Friday 6 May 2011.

The Pilbara?s hardest working athletes and volunteers were recently recognised at a Sports Awards and Volunteer Recognition Night at the Silver Star in Port Hedland.
