Two University of Florida veterinary residents honored

Two anatomic pathology residents at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine were honored during the 2012 meeting of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists held recently in Seattle.

The honorees are:

Sophie Wickins, a third-year resident, received the 2012 C.L. Davis Foundation Scholarship Award for Veterinary Pathology in recognition of scholarship.

Angelique Leone, also a third-year resident, received a young investigator award in the natural disease section for her poster, ?Giant Cell Meningoencephalomyelitis in a Pregnant Andalusian Mare.?

Darba Owens-Simmons, senior library specialist at Library Partnership, is the recipient of the 2012 Guy Hudspeth Award. She is being recognized for 30 years of service with the library district in a variety of positions at several locations, and for her superior public relations and public service skills.

Owens-Simmons?s name has been etched on a leaf and placed on Katherine?s Tree, a 10-foot etched-glass rendition of the Tree of Knowledge. Other award recipients include Memree Stewart in 2008, Martha Roberts in 2009, Phillis Filer in 2010, and Ike Welch in 2011.

The Guy Hudspeth Award, sponsored for the past six years by the Kosman Foundation, is named for Guy Hudspeth, the manager of the Archer Branch Library.

Buchholz High School senior Zachary Hodges recently received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy class of 2017, and will begin his studies in June 2013. Hodges received a congressional nomination from U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and was a principal nominee of former U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns.

Gainesville sailor Lt. Lincoln Schneider was recently recognized as one of the Navy?s 2012 Recruiters of the Year. He is a recruiting officer at the University of Florida for areas that include the Navy Medical Corps, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and Judge Advocate General?s Corps. Schneider is pursuing a master?s degree in public health at UF.

The Gainesville Fine Arts Association?s new board members include Karen Koegel, a Realtor; Tony Barrett, owner of Talking Walls Frame Shop in Haile Square; and Matt Lang, owner of Lang Jewelers in Tioga Town Center.

Keystone Heights resident Evelyne McKean was named to the Dean?s List at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., for the fall 2012 semester. To qualify for the Dean?s List, McKean earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average while carrying 14 or more semester hours.
