LAKELAND | The Cleveland Heights Golf Association Championship was once recognized as Lakeland's city championship in golf.
Cleveland Heights Club Pro Dante Battilla said the tournament was highly competitive from the 1970s into the 1990s. But interest waned, and there were fewer than 20 golfers the last time it was played three years ago.
Cleveland Heights is hoping to rekindle interest by holding the inaugural City of Lakeland Open Championship on Jan. 19.
"It used to be one of the big events here in the city a long time ago," Battilla said.
"It's something we're trying to bring back and keep going," he said.
Battilla said former champions include Andy Bean and players at Florida Southern who went on to the PGA Tour. Ben Davis won it in 1980 and Ben Darby in 1981.
The tournament, with a $50 entry fee, is open to residents of all ages. There will be three flights. The entry deadline is Sunday at 5 p.m.
"We're going to start it off at 18 holes this year and see how it goes," Battilla said. "If it starts to take off, we'll make it a 36-hole event."
Tee times start at 11:30 a.m. Men will play the A and C courses while women will compete on the B and A courses.
Winners will receive gift certificates in the pro shop.
