(AP) ? Pro-government militias battled fighters in a former stronghold of the late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi on Sunday, the fifth straight day of clashes that have killed at least 30 people.

The fighting in Bani Walid, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Tripoli, has overlapped with the anniversary of Gadhafi's capture and killing on Oct. 20, 2011. A year since his death brought an end to Libya's civil war, Bani Walid is the most significant city in the country to still resist the nation's new authorities.

A resident said Sunday by telephone that pro-government militias and fighters in the city were clashing on its outskirts. The resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said there were reports of new casualties, but that the fighting was less intense than a day earlier.

In Tripoli, some two hundred protesters demonstrated in front of the parliament building to urge the end of the fighting, which they say is harming only civilians. The demonstration was dispersed by a massive show of force when army units pulled up and opened fire above the heads of the crowd with heavy weaponry.

Government forces near Bani Walid said there were no civilians in the conflict area, and they had helped evacuate hundreds of residents a day earlier.

The official LANA news agency said at least 22 pro-government militiamen were killed during clashes Saturday. Pro-government militiamen said most of the casualties came during an ambush by fighters in the besieged city.

The violence Saturday coincided with conflicting reports about whether security forces had arrested Gadhafi's former spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, in Bani Walid.

The government said its forces had apprehended Ibrahim, but never produced evidence to support its statement. Then an audio recording purportedly by Ibrahim surfaced on the Internet denying that he had been arrested or that he was even in Libya.

The reports of Ibrahim's alleged arrested sparked brief celebrations in the Libyan capital. But in a reflection of the persistent lack of confidence in the new authorities, Libyans quickly began to demand that the government produce evidence ? photographs or video ? to back up their claims.

Government spokesmen could not be reached for further comment about Ibrahim.

Violence has flared periodically over the last year in Bani Walid. This round of fighting began when the pro-government Libya Shield militia besieged the town, blaming residents for the death of a well-known anti-Gadhafi rebel. Negotiations to hand over the suspects in the killing had failed.

Pro-government fighters on the road outside of Bani Walid were transporting fleeing civilians and foreign workers from the fighting. Some of the fleeing workers said others were locked up in the city because of the heavy shelling.

In the Wadi Dinar area, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) outside of Bani Walid, one pro-government fighter said civilians in the city are making it harder for his troops to go after fighters loyal to Gadhafi.

"We are doing two jobs. We are rescuing foreign workers, Egyptians and Africans, and putting them on vehicles out of the fighting area, and we are combing the area for armed gunmen," he said speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Another fighter, Nidal, from Libya Shield, said the fighting over Bani Walid was focused on two fronts but that his opponents are well armed. He was speaking as clashes continued at the Wadi Dinar gate into the city, saying his force and the Bani Walid fighters were exchanging fire from two hilltops.

"This is going to take more than one day. There is a distance between us," he said.

In Tripoli, the situation in the late afternoon was tense around the parliament with dozens of protesters at the doors of the building itself while outside a few hundred more called for the end to the siege.

Militiamen acting as police arrived to contain the crowd but many were from the Souq al-Jumaa neighborhood, which earlier in the year lost several fighters in Bani Walid. The confrontation resulted in angry exchanges.

The men fired in the air several times to disperse the crowd, who responded with defiance, waving Libyan revolutionary flags and bearing their chests in front of the militiamen. Women made up around half of the crowd.

"In Bani Walid no one supports Gadhafi," said a veiled woman who identified herself only as Um Mohammed, or mother of Mohammed. "We support this government."

Um Mohammed said her children and husband were in Bani Walid.

"We need protection," she said, expressing her fears that the pro-government militias would take their revenge on the city and destroy it like they have others.

The militiamen were unsympathetic and at times prevented the protesters from talking to journalists and started hauling people out of the crowd, detaining them and beating them near their trucks.

"These people here say they want their freedom, but we gave them a lot of chances to change their mind," said one militiaman. "A lot of Gadhafi people are hiding there and people from Bani Walid have killed a lot of people form Souq al-Jumaa."

The standoff ended when 12 army trucks pulled up filled with men wearing new camouflage uniforms who fired into the air with anti-aircraft guns, sending everyone to the ground.

The trucks then drove into the parliament compound and used similar methods to disperse the people inside. Journalists were also stopped from photographing.

Virtual Tailgate: Georgia at Kentucky Edition - A Sea Of Blue

Time for the weekly Virtual Tailgate -- Good virtual food and drink, and a little game talk.

Greetings and welcome, Kentucky Wildcats fans, to the Saturday Virtual Tailgate in honor of the Georgia Bulldogs, our opponent for tonight's game.

Tonight is homecoming for the Wildcats, and also Dermotti Dawson night in honor of the former Kentucky Wildcat, Pittsburgh Steeler, and newly-minted Professional Football Hall of Famer.

So let's get ourselves a cocktail, sit back and get ready for the game. Tonight's cocktail will be:

Rendezvous (via yosoynuts)

A rendezvous cocktail. It consists of gin, cherry brandy, and Campari. Three of these, and a hangover is guaranteed.

Moving on to the appetizer, there is nothing better in the world for a bunch of southerners than:

Fried green tomatoes with blue cheese and basil. Tasty. Yes, I know we have had them before, but hey, that's why they are a favorite.

The main course? Hmm.... let's see. We haven't had:

Fried Chicken (via delgaudm)

Everybody's favorite. You don't have to be from the south to appreciate this classic.

Side dishes? Yes, we have them. First and foremost:

Peach Cobbler (via purdman1)

Georgia peach cobbler a la mode. A classic finish to a classic Southern meal

Time to talk some football. Once again, as it has all season, the Wildcats find themselves in a very tough spot. Georgia is a much better team, and they are rested to boot, coming off a bye week. Not only that, they are still smarting from the last game they played, a beat-down by the South Carolina Gamecocks. They may well look to take out their frustrations on Kentucky.

The one advantage, if you can call it that, that Kentucky has is that Georgia will be looking past them to the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, their annual tilt against their hated foe, the Florida Gators. That will give Kentucky an opportunity to get a few punches in, and who knows, maybe Georgia will panic. I wouldn't count on it, though.

Georgia, with their running game, can simply grind Kentucky's defense into the turf of Commonwealth Stadium. Hopefully, they won't be as efficient in Kentucky as the Arkansas Razorbacks were in Fayetteville, or we could be looking at another embarrassing beat-down. Personally, I am looking at best for a "moral victory" here, keeping the final score within two touchdowns. Sadly, if UK team we have seen lately shows up again, that seems like a vain hope at best.

Word is that we'll be seeing more of Morgan Newton this game. I know that will frighten most of you, but frankly, I don't think it makes that much difference. Jalen Whitlow is talented, but he struggled mightily in the last couple of games, and unless he finds his confidence, it really doesn't matter all that much. On the better news side, Patrick Towles is on the mend, and may be ready for the next game. He didn't practice this week, but very well may next week.

That's what I have. Enjoy the virtual meal, and the open game thread will be up about 15 minutes prior to the game, as usual.

Go, 'Cats!

Private space taxi on track to launch astronauts

LAS CRUCES, N.M. ? Representatives from the three different companies chosen by NASA to develop private space taxis to carry astronauts to orbit say their vehicles are making substantial progress toward launching people into orbit within the next few years.

The companies ? Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), The Boeing Company, and Sierra Nevada Corp. ? are competing to fill the gap left by NASA's retired space shuttles for the launching of cargo and crews to the International Space Station. Each private space taxi firm has received funding from NASA under the Commercial Crew integrated Capability program (CCiCap) to complete a series of development milestones with the goal of taking over transportation to low-Earth orbit from the Russians.

"We're going great guns, we're working very hard, and we hope to have people flying very soon inside the Dragon," SpaceX's commercial crew project manager Garrett Reisman said Wednesday (Oct. 17) here at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight.

21st century space capsules
SpaceX's Dragon space capsule has already made two unmanned flights to the International Space Station this year under NASA's cargo delivery program. Work now is focused on outfitting the capsule to carry up to seven people by adding a launch abort capability and life support system, as well as designing spacesuits and the crew cabin layout.

The vehicle, which launches on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, could make its first crewed test flights in mid-2015, Reisman said.

Meanwhile, aerospace veteran Boeing is working on its CST-100 vehicle, a capsule intended to fly atop United Launch Alliance's Atlas 5 rocket, which has a proven track record launching unmanned satellites. The CST-100 is designed to carry up to seven people, and return to touch down on land via parachutes and airbags. [ CST-100: Boeing's Private Space Capsule (Photos) ]

"The real focus here is getting the final design and implementing a system that is safe, reliable and affordable," John Mulholland, vice president of commercial programs in Boeing's Space Exploration department, said today (Oct. 18).

The company just recently completed a preliminary design milestone called integrated systems review, and plans to set the vehicle's final design plans with a critical design review in April 2014. That should pave the way for the first people to fly on CST-100 in 2016, Mulholland said.

Have space plane, will travel
Sierra Nevada's entry into this new space race is called the Dream Chaser, and differs form the Dragon and CST-100 cone-shaped capsules in its winged space plane design.

Dream Chaser, too, will carry a crew of seven and launch on the Atlas 5, and is targeting a first manned launch in 2016 or 2017. Its goals for the near future are furthering the vehicle's design and performing preliminary test flights.

"When I first started looking at building a vehicle for this marketplace, people basically laughed," said Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president of Sierra Nevada's Space Systems. "People kept constantly saying, 'It can't be done, it can't be done.' We believe it not only can be done, it is being done. We really are on the verge of moving this whole industry form theory to practice."

While all three companies are initially developing their spacecraft to serve NASA, they intend eventually to carry a wide range of passengers, including space tourists, scientists and astronauts from countries without their own launch vehicles.

"Once we have this thing up and running for NASA we are free to use it for other purposes," Reisman said. "It does bring up a bunch of interesting possibilities. But this is all after we accomplish our primary job, which is getting Americans back into space on American vehicles."

Wait begins after huge turnout in Venezuela vote

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? A huge voter turnout swamped polling sites across Venezuela on Sunday as a united, well-organized opposition candidate gave President Hugo Chavez the race of his life.

Tensions rose in the bitterly divided country while an undetermined number of voting stations remained open after the official 6 p.m. closing time, with not a single result announced nearly three hours later.

Chavez, a socialist who has ruled for nearly 14 years, called on Venezuelans to await results patiently, speaking briefly Sunday night by phone during a news conference held by his campaign chief.

Electoral officials gave no indication of when they might begin releasing first returns. Exit polling is forbidden in Venezuela.

The electoral council's president, Tibisay Lucena, said any stations where voters had not cast ballots would remain open. Meanwhile, bands of red-shirted pro-Chavez motorcyclists, honking horns, roved central Caracas ensuring that such stations stayed open.

While not accusing the government of an intentional delay, challenger Henrique Capriles complained via Twitter that most voting stations lacked lines and that the government should get on with the vote-counting.

Capriles spokesman Armando Briquet demanded that all motorcycle traffic be banned. In the past, gangs of red-shirted motorcyclists chanting pro-Chavez slogans have intimidated people.

Chavez's campaign manager, Jorge Rodriguez, told reporters there were no such plans. "This country has freedom of circulation," he said at a news conference.

Capriles has united the opposition in a contest between two sides that distrust each other so deeply that some expressed concerns whether a close election result would be respected.

If Chavez wins, he gets a free hand to push for an even bigger state role in the economy, further limit dissent and continue to befriend rivals of the United States.

With a Capriles win, an abrupt foreign policy shift can be expected, including halting preferential oil deals with allies such as Cuba, along with a loosening of state economic controls and an increase in private investment. A tense transition would likely follow until the January inauguration because Chavez's political machine thoroughly controls the wheels of government.

"We will recognize the results, whatever they are," Chavez told reporters after casting his vote in Caracas. He said he was pleased by the "massive turnout."

The stakes in the country with the world's largest known oil reserves couldn't be higher.

Just as polls closed, one of several dozen young red-shirted Chavistas on motorcycles said they were ready to begin celebrating.

"Let them accept defeat," one of them, Kleiver Gutierrez, said of the opposition.

One pro-Chavez voter, private bodyguard Carlos Julio Silva, said that whatever his faults, Chavez deserves to win for spreading the nation's oil wealth to the poor with free medical care, public housing and other government largess..

"There is corruption, there's plenty of bureaucracy, but the people have never had a leader who cared about this country," Silva said after voting for Chavez at a school in the Caracas slum of Petare. "That's why the people are going to re-elect Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias."

At many polling places, voters started lining up hours before polls opened at dawn, some snaking blocks in the baking Caribbean sun. Some shaded themselves with umbrellas. Vendors grilled meat and some people drank beer.

Maria Leonis was selling CDs of Chavez's campaign theme music on a sidewalk next to a polling center. "Today I've sold about 100 CDs, just Chavez's song," Leonis said, adding that she supported Chavez because "I want to keep seeing change."

Chavez's critics said the president has inflamed divisions by labeling his opponents "fascists," ''Yankees" and "neo-Nazis," while Chavez's loyalists alleged Capriles would halt generous government programs that assist the poor.

"I'm really tired of all this polarization," said Lissette Garcia, a 39-year-old clothes seller and Capriles supporter who voted in the affluent Caracas district of Las Mercedes. "I want to reconnect with all my friends who are 'Chavistas.'"

Violence flared sporadically during the campaign, including shootings and rock-throwing during rallies and political caravans. Two Capriles supporters were shot to death in the western state of Barinas last weekend.

Troops guarded thousands of voting centers across the country.

Defense Minister Henry Rangel Silva said as he voted that all had been calm and he hoped that would continue. He said if any groups try to "disturb order, they should know there is an armed force prepared and equipped and trained ... to put down any attempt at disturbances."

He didn't identify the groups to which he was referring.

Chavez's opponents mounted a noisy protest in Caracas and other major cities Saturday night, beating pots and pans from the windows of their homes to show displeasure with the president ? and also their hopes for change. Drivers on downtown streets honked horns, joining the din.

The 40-year-old Capriles, a wiry former governor affectionately called "Skinny" by supporters, infused the opposition with new optimism, and opinion polls pointed to him giving Chavez his closest election.

Some recent polls gave Chavez a lead of about 10 percentage points, while others put the two candidates about even.

Chavez spoke little during the campaign about his fight with cancer, which since June 2011 has included surgery to remove tumors from his pelvic region as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has said his most recent tests showed no sign of illness.

"Chavez is going to fight until his last breath. He doesn't know how to do anything else," said Antonio Padron, a bank employee backing the president. Padron expressed optimism that the 58-year-old Chavez would win but predicted a close finish: "It's a tough fight. The opposition has never been this strong."

Chavez won the last presidential vote in 2006 with 63 percent of the vote.

A former army paratroop commander first elected in 1999, Chavez has presided over an oil boom and has spent billions of dollars on social programs ranging from cash benefits for single mothers to free education.

But he has suffered declining support due to one of the world's highest murder rates, 18 percent inflation, a deteriorating electrical grid and a bloated government accused of endemic corruption and mismanagement.

While his support has slipped at home, Chavez has also seen his international influence ebb since he emerged in the mid-2000s as leader of a like-minded club of newly elected Latin American leftist presidents.

Chavez accumulated near-absolute power over the past decade thanks to his control of the National Assembly, pliant institutions such as the Central Bank and friendly judges.

Capriles said Chavez has stirred up hatred, hobbled the economy by expropriating private businesses and squandered oil wealth. He criticized Chavez's preferential deals supplying oil to allies, including one that lets Cuba pay with the services of Cuban doctors.

At one voting center in western Zulia state, in the municipality of Santa Rita, voters said some people had actually formed two separate lines ? one with Chavez supporters and the other with Capriles supporters. Elsa Gutierrez, a housewife and Capriles supporter, said it was wrong to have two lines and feared it could lead to conflicts.

"This situation can't be permitted," Gutierrez said, adding that she voted for Capriles "because I want this division in my country to end."

Political analyst Ricardo Sucre said he expected the election to show "two halves, more or less even." Regardless of the result, he said, Venezuelans are likely to remain deeply divided by politics for years to come.

Five Step Check List for Your Estate Plan | Financial Wellness @ Work

What did Heath Ledger and former Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger have in common?? Their career choices couldn?t have been more different but in their estate planning, they made similar mistakes ? ones that could have been easily avoided.? Heath Ledger made the mistake of not updating his will when his daughter was born and even though Warren Burger was a Supreme Court Justice, well versed in the law, he made the mistake of doing it himself and ended up leaving out some key provisions.? In both cases, the family paid the price.? If a Supreme Court Justice can make a mistake, anyone can.

Here is an estate planning to-do list that can give you a framework to look for what might be missing in your plan:

1)????? Start with what you have.? Make some lists:

* Your valuable physical property ? automobiles, furniture, jewelry, antiques, firearms, collectables, etc.

* Your investments ? your home, investment property, retirement accounts, bank and brokerage accounts.

* Benefits ? life insurance, employee benefits, Social Security information

* Debts ? what you owe and who you owe it to

2)????? What do you want to do with your property?

* Assign beneficiaries on your retirement accounts (double check they are correct!) and also possibly your brokerage and bank accounts as a ?transfer on death? or ?payable on death.?

*? Determine who you would like to leave your property, such as your heirloom jewelry, to and assign names to pieces ? take photos of the items and include them with your documents.

3)????? Consider what could go wrong.? This is often a missing step because truthfully, it isn?t pleasant to think about all the things that can go wrong. Before setting up your estate documents, take some time to? think about the financial situations and the personalities of your beneficiaries.? For example, do you have special considerations such as leaving a large amount of money to a beneficiary that would have a difficult time handling it?

One of our financial planners, Diane Winland, shared an example of some clients she?d worked with in handling their estate plan (in a former life before becoming a financial educator).? They loved their adult son dearly but were concerned about leaving him a large inheritance.? They set up their trust so their son would receive some funds monthly but also would receive an amount double what he earned on a 1099 or a W-2 at the end of the year ? incentivizing him to work to ensure the trust would provide some support throughout his life. ??He wasn?t happy about it and fought the trustee tooth and nail but the trust language prevailed.

4)????? Put your estate plan in place.? Setting up your plans puts some teeth into it. Whether you go with a will or a trust, setting up the document makes it official so a probate court for a will or if needed (hopefully not) a court of law can uphold it.? Because estate planning is so complex, it makes sense for most people to work with an estate planning attorney . ?Some resources on setting up a will if you want to do it yourself are Legacy Writer(TM)? and Nolo.? Check your employee benefits as many companies have a legal benefit or financial guidance either directly as an employee benefit, in a financial wellness program, or through your EAP.

5)????? Don?t forget other important documents. Some other documents to put in place to help you now ? not after you pass away ? are financial powers of attorney so if you are sick and can?t sign, someone can take care of your financial matters for you and medical powers of attorney so someone can talk to your doctor and make medical decisions if you aren?t able to.? The living will is a separate document that deals with end of life issues ? you?ll need that, also.? These documents need to be updated if you move to a different state. Estate planning requires some thought and a little attention to detail but once it?s set up, all it requires of you is to review it once a year or in the event you have a significant change such as the birth of a child. Otherwise, your family could be the one paying the price.

Easy ways to heal a sore wrist | hand brace, braces for tendonitis ...

hand brace, braces for tendonitis

?

With a sore wrist one can feel rather incapacitated and useless. Apart from that the pain is also usually excruciating. This is what I realized when I saw my dad have along with couple of other people suffering with it. The key to treating a sore wrist is that one should get relief from pain along with acceleration of the process and healing. Do not forget to ensure that the injury does not reoccur again too.

The treatment of a sore wrist can be tricky, since there are several reasons for the same. One of the most common and useful ways to heal is a hand brace. There are a variety of hand braces that one can get. Did you know there were several styles, materials and sizes also?

My brother is an active sportsperson who suffered from carpal tunnel. He used the hand brace and it helped him in a number of ways like the following:

  • It provided direct support to the wrist along with forearm
  • My brother is a fidgety person , but this brace limited the amount of stress and unnecessary movement of the wrist
  • The restriction of movement helped in easing the pain and discomfort
  • There is a support rod which absorbs the pressure since it allowed his wrist to be kept in a neutral position

In fact did you know you could get braces for tendonitis as well? It proves to be rather beneficial too in healing the sore wrist. It works especially well in the night since that is the time when one ends up bending and twisting the hand unconsciously. The result is only an aggravated situation in the absence of the brace.

The key is that whatever treatment one undertakes, it should be comfortable. In the event of it being painful or irritating it should be adjusted immediately. Do not forget to consult your doctor before wearing any of these braces too!
