As Romney campaign expands, focus is on loyalty

BOSTON (AP) ? One word defines Mitt Romney's inner circle: loyal.

For years, the GOP presidential candidate has stuck with a core team of advisers who shun backbiting and value secrecy. But that close-knit culture could be tested as Romney's campaign staff expands to compete against President Barack Obama in the general election.

"It takes new money, it takes new people to come into the campaign," Romney said recently, mindful of the campaign growth spurt under way. "It has a whole different feel to the process than does the primary."

Change, he made clear, is certain ? except, it seems, when it comes to the top people who shepherded him through the primary process.

Romney's inner circle is arguably the same one he'll rely on if he wins in November and moves into the White House. The group has been with him for more than six years, including one failed presidential run. The team is so tight-knit that many of them keep apartments in the same building in Boston, around the corner from the campaign's headquarters on the Charles River.

"When we went through difficult times, where in other campaigns you might have second guessing, our team held together pretty tight," said Katie Packer Gage, a deputy campaign manager who was part of Romney's 2008 presidential effort. "There was never anybody turning on anybody else. There was just a very high degree of loyalty, ultimately to Mitt and to each other."

The risk of relying on longtime loyalists is that campaigns can become insular and unwilling to listen to outsiders.

That explains why Romney recently broadened his inner circle with the addition of Ed Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman with years of general election campaign experience. Gillespie, who was not involved in Romney's primary campaign this year or in 2008, was introduced to the mix gingerly over time and helped out behind the scenes long before the official announcement in April that he had come on board.

Romney's campaign will continue adding staff, and advisers acknowledge that is bound to put more stress on the core group.

But Gage doesn't see that becoming a big problem.

"As it gets bigger and you recognize that the needs of the campaign shift, there will be other folks that join the family, so to speak. People that are going to put Mitt Romney before any motivation or agenda," she said. "And as long as we have that in common, things are going to work out fine."

A look at Romney's inner circle:

THE FRIEND

?Bob White. He doesn't have an official title, but he's worked with Romney since both were partners at Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney helped start. Romney called White for help running the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, and he's been involved in every one of Romney's political campaigns. He has an office at headquarters and often leads meetings.

THE SAGE

? Ed Gillespie. He's one of the few Romney aides with extensive presidential campaign experience. He headed the Republican National Committee during President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign and later joined the White House as an adviser. Gillespie is the only senior adviser to join Romney's campaign this year.

THE VEEP VETTER

?Beth Myers. She was Romney's chief of staff during his term as Massachusetts governor. She also ran his 2008 presidential bid and is now leading his search for a vice presidential running mate. Myers is personally close to the candidate and his wife, Ann.

THE ATTACK DOG

?Eric Fehrnstrom. A former newspaper reporter, Fehrnstrom has served as Romney's spokesman since he was governor. He frequently travels with Romney and is considered an authority on Romney's record in Massachusetts.

THE BRIDGE

?Peter Flaherty. He oversees Romney's outreach to the Republican Party's conservative wing. A devout Catholic, Flaherty has deep ties to the evangelical community, as well, and has assiduously courted social conservative activists who have been reluctant to back Romney. Flaherty has worked for Romney for nearly a decade and was deputy chief of staff in the governor's office.

THE TASKMASTER

?Matt Rhoades. The behind-the-scenes campaign manager, Rhoades was Romney's 2008 communications director. His background in opposition research was obvious during the primaries as Romney battered his opponents with TV ads hitting their records on everything from the government-controlled mortgage company Freddie Mac to voting rights for felons.

THE GURUS

?Stuart Stevens and Russ Schriefer. Longtime partners, they are Romney's ad makers and senior strategists. Stevens, the lead speechwriter, is at Romney's side on the campaign trail. Romney frequently calls him after big campaign moments to check in and discuss developments.

Tips For Maintaining A Chemical-Free Organic Garden

Organic gardening can yield many healthy benefits, but figuring out how to prepare it properly can be a challenge. When it comes to seeds, there are many to pick from. Here are some steps you can take to ensure you get what you need to grow your organic garden.

Get your organic garden certified so you can credibly claim that your crops are organic. This also does several things to boost your business. First, it is likely to increase your sales as it builds trust in more customers. Second, it shows customers who have been loyal that the quality produce you provide is top notch.

Plants that act as companions to others can be a big benefit in a garden. Some plants, when placed near other plants, actually help their neighbor plants grow. For example, a companion plant may serve to repel insects and other pests, or it might enrich the soil. Either way, the plant makes using chemical fertilizers and pesticides a moot point. For example, any plant that has a heavy smell will help repel pests.

You?ll save time and energy if you keep tools nearby while working in your garden. You could do this by using a big bucket, or just wear old pants that have some deep pockets. Have gloves, shears, a trowel and anything else you need handy for quick use.

When it is harvest time, use a laundry basket. It makes a great strainer for your vegetables. The basket won?t be affected by the water and it will drain right off as though it were poured into a large sieve.

When planting seeds in containers, remember that the depth should be at least three times bigger than the seed. There are exceptions to this rule though, as some seeds need direct sunlight to grow. Two common examples of this type of seed are ageratum and petunias. If you are unsure about the specific needs of your seeds, you should consult your local garden center or conduct further research online. Important things to look for include water requirements, ideal soil type, and recommended sunlight exposure.

Be aware of how and when to water your organic garden plants. A soaker hose is your best option for watering. They have the ability to water just the plant?s base, solving the problem of moisture loss due to evaporation. Watering is best done early in the morning.

Healthier soil grows healthier plants that can withstand insect damage and disease. Pests may still be present, but they will not inflict damage on your plants.

Water your plants appropriately for the climate. Other factors that influence how much you need to water include time of day, soil factors and how hard your water is. For instance, if you live in a humid climate where it never goes below 30 degrees Celsius, refrain from watering the leaves, as this will inevitably invite leaf fungus. Water the roots with care.

One odd but apparently useful tip for growing organic plants, is to lightly brush your plants with your fingers or a piece of cardboard 1-2 times a day. This sounds like total nonsense, but there is research suggesting that it does promote plant growth relative to unpetted plants.

Space is important to remember when planting an organic garden. It can be easy to underestimate how much space your plants will need once they begin growing. You will need to provide this space to provide ample room and because you need air circulating to your garden. Plan your organic garden while keeping this in mind, and space your seeds accordingly, when planting.

Think about the shades trees will cast before planting them. Trees that throw shade on your home during the hot summer months can be an important ally in reducing energy costs.

You should use wood that is untreated, brick or stone when building the raised bed. Make sure the wood you use is untreated and rot resistant. Cypress, cedar or locust wood are appropriate selections. Treated wood has chemicals that can be harmful to a vegetable garden. If you have to use treated wood, you should line it with a bit of plastic to create a barrier.

In conclusion, organic gardening can be a critical component of fulfilling your dietary goals. The knowledge that you gain from this pursuit is fulfilling in itself. Familiarizing yourself with the advice provided in this article is a great way to start your organic garden or improve your organic gardening techniques. Make your garden as valuable as it can be for your family

HIBALL INC., a true pioneer in the energy drink category, is pleased to announce the distribution of its newly reformulated and repackaged line of energy drinks to more than 250 WHOLE FOODS MARKET stores throughout the US.

Now sold in 16oz cold activated cans, Hiball?s line of ORGANIC SPARKLING ENERGY DRINKS and SPARKLING ENERGY WATERS began rolling out into WHOLE FOODS MARKET?s stores mid-June, featuring a revised formula with organic and fair trade certified ingredients. The entire HIBALL ENERGY line received an upgrade and now contains the following certified organic active ingredients for energy: guarana (50mg), ginseng (50mg) and caffeine (160mg) per can.

The?naturally, zero calorie?HIBALL SPARKLING ENERGY WATERS are free of any sugar or sweeteners of any kind and remain the only Sparkling Energy Water and unsweetened energy drink available in the market today. The HIBALL ORGANIC SPARKLING ENERGY DRINKS add a little more flavor and sweetness by including organic juice, fair trade certified organic sugar but still only contain 100 calories and 25 grams of sugar per 16oz can.

? In addition to sourcing the most premium organic and fair trade ingredients available, Hiball also upgraded its packaging. Consumers will notice that the 10oz glass bottles have been replaced with new 16oz cold-activated cans made by Ball Corp. The new cans are made with thermochromic ink built into the award winning design by ALYSSA WARNOCK DESIGN STUDIO (www.alyssawarnock.com). Once the can temperature drops below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the pattern of ?sparkling dots? turn from white to blue, indicating that the product is at the optimal temperature to drink.

? FOUNDER?TODD BERARDI?states, ?We are incredibly thrilled to launch the new 16oz Hiball Energy cans with Whole Foods Market. We knew it was a big change switching from glass bottles to cans, but we realized it would allow us the perfect opportunity to offer premium organic ingredients in a 60 percent larger package that was fully recyclable, while at the same time lowering our retail price per ounce by as much as 30 percent. The new cans allow consumers a wider variety of occasions in which to enjoy the healthiest option for energy, which is what our customers ultimately asked us for. The decision to launch the cans proved to be a good one, as volume has increased substantially.?

? UNITED NATURAL FOODS, INC. (UNFI) is currently distributing all six reformulated HIBALL ENERGY products to WHOLE FOODS MARKET, available in the following SPARKLING ENERGY WATER flavors: Wild Berry, Lemon Lime, Vanilla and Grapefruit. Organic Sparkling Energy Drink Flavors: Cranberry Apple and Wild Berry.

1 cup butter
1 cup caster (very fine) sugar
4 eggs
2 cups self-rising flour
1 large vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped from pod
2 teaspoons finely ground black pepper
1 pint heavy whipping cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons good quality balsamic vinegar

PREPARATION?????
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 8? springform cake pans and line bottoms with circle of parchment paper.

Beat butter and sugar together with electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time until just incorporated. Fold in flour gradually until smooth.

Stir in vanilla bean and black pepper and pour batter into prepared cake pans.

Bake 30-35 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean from center of cake. Cool in baking pan for 8-10 minutes; remove and place on rack to cool before assembly.

TO ASSEMBLE:

In large mixing bowl, combine heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and balsamic vinegar. With electric mixer, whip until stiff peaks are formed.

Place one cooled cake layer on cake stand or serving plate. Spread sliced strawberries evenly across the cake.

Layer the strawberries with half the balsamic whipped cream. Top with the second cake layer. Repeat with whipped cream mixture and top with whole strawberries. For an interesting styling trick, leave some strawberries whole and cut some halves to add dimension to the garnish.

?GOT MILK?? Gives Helping Hand With Glasses Sale

Sale to Raise $50K for State Non-Profits Promoting Health & Nutrition
The CALIFORNIA MILK PROCESSOR BOARD (CMPB), the creator of GOT MILK?, announced today the creation of a FOUR-WEEK SALE OF LIMITED EDITION MILK GLASSES from Jul. 9 Through Aug. 5, 2012 to benefit community-based organizations in the Golden State. ?THINK Together, the BAY AREA COMMUNITY RESOURCES and the CENTRAL VALLEY AFTERSCHOOL FOUNDATION, which support afterschool and summer programs for children and their parents to make wholesome, ?real? and ?simple? food choices for a healthy lifestyle, will work with GOT MILK? to raise $50,000 during the sale.

?We are honored to be chosen to become a part of this effort,? says Randy Barth, founder and CEO of THINK Together. ??All three organizations believe that education is key to a healthy lifestyle and we?re excited to partner with GOT MILK? as it recognizes and wants to reward us for the work that we do with California families day in and day out.?

photo courtesy: Got Milk? (PRNewsFoto/The California Milk Processor Board)

The glass sale is the extension of GOT MILK??s latest campaign, ?Science of Imitation Milk,? which educates California consumers of the long list of hard-to-pronounce ingredients in imitation milk, contrasting that of the pure, simple nature of dairy milk. ?The LIMITED EDITION GLASSES, which hope to bring this message home to families while helping a good cause, come two in a set: the real milk glass shows the very short list of ingredients that can be found in dairy milk (milk and vitamin D3) in contrast to the ?imitation milk? glass which has a multitude of ingredients that include soy beans, water, zinc gluconate and carrageenan, among others. ?During the four-week sale, the pair can be purchased on?www.gotmilk.com/glasses?for $15, which includes shipping and handling, with 100 percent of the purchase going directly to the community organizations to support nutrition education programs in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco/San Jose and Fresno. ?The goal of the sale is to raise $10,000 for each area for a total of $50,000.

The CALIFORNIA MILK PROCESSOR BOARD was established in 1993 to make milk more competitive and increase milk consumption in California. Awareness of GOT MILK? is over 90% nationally and it is considered one of the most important and successful campaigns in history. ?GOT MILK? is a federally registered trademark that has been licensed by the national dairy boards since 1995. ?The CMPB?s Spanish-language campaign began in 1994 using the tagline ?Familia, Amor y Leche? (Family, Love and Milk). ?The TOMA LECHE (Drink Milk) campaign replaced it in 2006, following a growing trend in Hispanic food advertising that uses wit and humor to reach audiences. ?GOT MILK? gifts and recipes can be viewed at?www.gotmilk.com?and?www.tomaleche.com. ?The CMPB is funded by all California milk processors and administered by the CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE.

?We chose THINK Together, the Bay Area Community Resources and the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation to be the recipients of the sale because they give so much to the communities they serve to ensure that families keep wholesome, real and simple food choices, like milk, top of mind coupled with daily exercise,? says Steve James, executive director of the CMPB. ??From teaching health curriculum with programs such as Harvest of the Month and the Dairy Council?s Deal Me In program to the introduction of new healthy cooking classes in select cities, they are making a difference in the lives of many, one family at a time.?
To purchase the ?Science of Imitation? glasses until Aug. 5, 2012, visit?www.gotmilk.com/glasses.

As the largest non-profit provider of extended learning time programs, THINK TOGETHER?s statewide infrastructure enables the organization to leverage private philanthropy across the publicly-funded distribution system to provide high-quality wellness and afterschool programs in every community. Private gifts enable THINK Together to offer hands-on learning enrichment opportunities in this area that include the ?Healthy Living? program as part of its Extended Learning Time, CATCH (COORDINATED APPROACH TO CHILDHOOD HEALTH), ?Harvest of the Month? and ?Deal Me In?, a collaborative effort with the DAIRY COUNCIL OF CALIFORNIA.

The BAY AREA COMMUNITY RESOURCES (BACR) promotes the healthy development of individuals, families and communities by providing direct services in seven Bay Area counties and leveraging volunteerism to further strengthen the communities it serves. Among BACR?s direct services is an extensive afterschool program where children and youth can learn to be productive, build positive relationships, and participate in meaningful academic and enrichment activities. The organization supports this programming at over 70 schools in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and Marin counties. ?BACR out-of-school-time and youth leadership programs promote the successful, holistic development of youth, including healthy life-style choices.

The CENTRAL VALLEY AFTERSCHOOL FOUNDATION (CVAF) is an innovative nonprofit technical assistance organization that promotes the development of underserved children and youth in central California during their time out of school. Founded in 2005, CVAF supports afterschool and summer program excellence through training and coaching, community partnership development, special events, public awareness initiatives, and curriculum development including a new Culinary Arts Project to benefit low-income youth in the region.
