Demi Lovato Confirmed As 'X Factor' Judge

Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event.

America will meet the rebooted panel of the "X Factor" on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge's table will be Demi Lovato. The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well.

Lovato is one of the many names
 that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.

TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall.

Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million
 for one season's work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell's lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show's new lineup at its upfront presentations.

Though Lovato has a summer tour planned
, those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on "X Factor."

A spokesperson for "X Factor" could not be reached for comment at press time.

Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to "X Factor" makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. "I think it is a good move, actually," said Entertainment Weekly
 writer Tanner Stransky. "I think she has so many people on her team watching what she's doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it's the right move right now."

The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. "I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she's been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled," said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard. "And there can be uncontrollable moments on 'The X Factor,' and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome."

Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that "X Factor" producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who've struggled with personal issues
 and neither has experience appearing on live network television.

We didn't notice any purple screen niggles during our Lumia 900 review. For some users, however, the purple hue issue is real and not so spectacular. Thousands march as Japan shuts off nuclear power

TOKYO (AP) ? Thousands of Japanese marched to celebrate the switching off of the last of their nation's 50 nuclear reactors Saturday, waving banners shaped as giant fish that have become a potent anti-nuclear symbol.

Japan was without electricity from nuclear power for the first time in four decades when the reactor at Tomari nuclear plant on the northern island of Hokkaido went offline for mandatory routine maintenance.

After last year's March 11 quake and tsunami set off meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, no reactor halted for checkups has been restarted amid public worries about the safety of nuclear technology.

"Today is a historic day," Masashi Ishikawa shouted to a crowd gathered at a Tokyo park, some holding traditional "koinobori" carp-shaped banners for Children's Day that have become a symbol of the anti-nuclear movement.

"There are so many nuclear plants, but not a single one will be up and running today, and that's because of our efforts," Ishikawa said.

The activists said it is fitting that the day Japan stopped nuclear power coincides with Children's Day because of their concerns about protecting children from radiation, which Fukushima Dai-ichi is still spewing into the air and water.

The government has been eager to restart nuclear reactors, warning about blackouts and rising carbon emissions as Japan is forced to turn to oil and gas for energy.

Japan now requires reactors to pass new tests to withstand quakes and tsunami and to gain local residents' approval before restarting.

The response from people living near nuclear plants has been mixed, with some wanting them back in operation because of jobs, subsidies and other benefits to the local economy.

The mayor of Tomari city, Hiroomi Makino, is among those who support nuclear power.

"There may be various ways of thinking but it's extremely regrettable," he said of the shutdown.

Major protests, like the one Saturday, have been generally limited to urban areas like Tokyo, which had received electricity from faraway nuclear plants, including Fukushima Dai-ichi.

Before the nuclear crisis, Japan relied on nuclear power for a third of its electricity.

The crowd at the anti-nuclear rally, estimated at 5,500 by organizers, shrugged off government warnings about a power shortage. If anything, they said, with the reactors going offline one by one, it was clear the nation didn't really need nuclear power.

Whether Japan will suffer a sharp power crunch is still unclear.

Electricity shortages are expected only at peak periods, such as the middle of the day in hot weather, and critics of nuclear power say proponents are exaggerating the consequences to win public approval to restart reactors.

Hokkaido Electric Power Co. spokesman Hisatoshi Kibayashi said the shutdown was completed late Saturday.

The Hokkaido Tomari plant has three reactors, but the other two had been halted earlier. Before March 11 last year, the nation had 54 nuclear reactors, but four of the six reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi are being decommissioned because of the disaster.

Yoko Kataoka, a retired baker who was dancing to the music at the rally waving a small paper carp, said she was happy the reactor was being turned off.

"Let's leave an Earth where our children and grandchildren can all play without worries," she said, wearing a shirt that had, "No thank you, nukes," handwritten on the back.

Berkshire Hathaway's 1Q profit more than doubles

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Warren Buffett's company said Friday its first-quarter profit more than doubled because Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s insurance units avoided major disaster losses and the paper value of its derivative contracts improved.

Berkshire said it generated $3.245 billion in net income, or $1,966 per Class A share. That's up from last year's net income of $1.511 billion, or $917 per Class A share. The earnings report was released as thousands of Berkshire shareholders were gathering in Omaha for Saturday's annual meeting.

Last year's results were hurt by $1.1 billion in insurance losses from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Australian floods and the New Zealand earthquake.

The overall results fell short of what the four analysts surveyed by FactSet expected. They had forecast Berkshire would report earnings per Class A share of $2,297.50 on $39.154 billion in revenue.

Berkshire says its revenue grew 13 percent to $38.1 billion from last year's $33.7 billion.

Berkshire's insurance division, which includes Geico and General Reinsurance, contributed $54 million to the Omaha-based company's profits. That was much better than last year's $821 million loss, but slower than past years. Two years ago, Berkshire reported a $226 million underwriting gain in the first quarter.

Berkshire said Geico's expenses grew as it began to comply with new accounting standards for certain policies and losses were slightly higher.

Price competition remained tough in reinsurance, so Berkshire said its companies continued to refuse to write policies when they considered the premiums inadequate.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad contributed $701 million to Berkshire's net income, up from $607 million a year ago.

BNSF said it hauled three percent more carloads in the first quarter of 2012 than it did last year. The railroad said growth in the number of consumer and industrial products it carried offset decreases in coal and agricultural goods.

Last year's acquisition of specialty chemical maker Lubrizol boosted Berkshire's manufacturing, retail and service unit. That diverse group of businesses added $854 million net income, up from $558 million a year ago.

Several of Berkshire's manufacturing companies, such as Acme brick, Shaw carpeting and Benjamin Moore paint, make building products, so their performance continues to be hurt by the slow pace of housing construction.

Berkshire's utility unit, MidAmerican Energy, added $338 million, up from last year's $301 million.

Berkshire estimated that its derivative contracts were worth $650 million at the end of the first quarter, well ahead of last year when they were worth $176 million.

The swing in the value of Berkshire's derivatives contributed to an overall gain on investments and derivatives of $580 million. A year ago, Berkshire recorded an $82 million loss on its investments and derivatives.

The true value of the derivatives won't be clear for at least several years, because they don't mature until at least a decade from now on average. But Berkshire is required to estimate their value every time the company reports earnings. Buffett has told investors he believes the contracts will ultimately be profitable because the premiums are being invested.

Berkshire's operating earnings were $2.67 billion in the first quarter, up 67 percent over last year's $1.59 billion. Buffett has said Berkshire's operating earnings are a better measure of how the company is performing in any given period, because those figures exclude the value of derivatives and investment gains or losses.

Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms. Its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

MicroRNA controls malignancy and resistance of breast cancer cells

Many breast cancer patients are treated with a drug called tamoxifen. The substance blocks the effect of estrogen and thus suppresses the growth signals of this hormone in cancer cells. When resistance to the drug develops, tumor cells change their growth program: They change their behavior and shape, become more mobile and also adopt the ability to invade surrounding tissue. Scientists working with PD (Associate Professor) Dr. Stefan Wiemann of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) have now also observed these changes in tamoxifen resistant breast cancer cells.

"Resistances to drugs are the main reason why therapies fail and disease progresses in many cancers," Wiemann explains. "We want to understand what goes on in the cells when this happens so we can develop better therapies in the future." Wiemann's co-worker, Dr. ?zg?r Sahin, suspects that tiny pieces of RNA known as microRNAs play a role in resistance development. "These minuscule RNA snippets control many cellular processes by attaching themselves to target gene transcripts and thus repressing protein production."

By treating breast cancer cells in vitro with regular doses of tamoxifen, Sahin's team induced resistance of these cells to the drug. As resistance developed, the cancer cells switched to the development program that makes them grow even more invasively and more malignantly. Checking the complete spectrum of microRNAs in the resistant tumor cells, the investigators noticed that production of microRNA 375 was more strongly reduced than others. When they boosted the production of microRNA 375, the cells started responding again to tamoxifen and switched back to their normal growth program. "This strongly suggests that a lack of microRNA 375 both increases malignancy and contributes to resistance development," says ?zg?r Sahin.

If microRNA 375 levels are low, breast cancer cells increase the production of metadherin. Apparently, microRNA 375 suppresses the production of this cancer-promoting protein in healthy cells. In patients receiving tamoxifen therapy the team found that high metadherin levels in the cancer cells go along with a high risk of recurrence. This suggests that microRNA 375 and metadherin are involved in the development of resistance to tamoxifen.

"The analysis of microRNAs in breast cancer has put us on the track of metadherin. We will possibly be able to specifically influence the cancer-promoting properties of this protein in the future," says Wiemann describing the goal of further research.

Francis Lawrence's 'Catching Fire' To-Do List

As a new helmer takes over 'The Hunger Games,' Hobnobbing examines the challenges (and opportunities) that lie ahead.

The reaping has concluded, with Francis Lawrence officially named victor in the contest to direct "Catching Fire," according to a release from Lionsgate.

It's been a fraught few weeks for fans following director Gary Ross' announcement that he would not helm the series' second installment. Numerous directors were reportedly in contention for the coveted position, including Alfonso Cuarón, David Cronenberg, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Bennett Miller. Lionsgate and producer Nina Jacobson ultimately singled out Lawrence, who most recently shepherded "Water for Elephants" from the page to the screen.

"From the very beginning of this brilliant trilogy's journey from page to screen, our first priority has been to stay true to the heart and soul of Suzanne Collins' powerful stories. From my first conversation with Francis, I knew he would make a great partner for both me and Suzanne," producer Nina Jacobson said in a statement. "His passion for 'Catching Fire' and inspired ideas for a faithful adaptation make him the perfect director for this movie. I know this will be a wonderful collaboration and I cannot wait to get started."

With a November 23, 2013, release date looming, Lawrence has a lot to accomplish within the next 18 months. From currying favor among Panem's faithful to casting a cabal of characters, let's examine the opportunities and challenges that await the director:

Fan Following
Say what you will about Ross' vision for and execution of the first installment of Suzanne Collins' series, but the director won over fickle fans before a single frame ever rolled by, positioning himself as an acolyte first and director second. Lawrence is already off to a winning start, posting a special message for fans on Facebook:

Hello fellow Hunger Games fans! I just want you all to know how unbelievably excited and honored I am to be a part of Catching Fire. At the end of the day, all of the work that I put in to my movies is for you -- the fans. Make sure to post and let me know what you're most excited to see in this adaptation as we aim to make something truly faithful and spectacular!

Lawrence can continue building consensus by giving fans further insight into his vision. How about sharing a sneak peek of concept art? Or, as filming progresses, taking a page out of "Breaking Dawn" director Bill Condon's playbook and sharing on-set images early? Involving fans during the film's infancy will keep fans eager and engaged.

Study Sequels
There are few more feared curses than the sophomore slump. Propelling an established narrative forward in an engaging and meaningful manner can sometimes be tricky, but it's an art that directors like Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") have mastered. Better yet, Lawrence would be wise to look at franchises helmed by multiple directors (hello, "Harry Potter") to strategize a smooth transition.

Find Finnick (and Johanna and ... )
Lawrence's first high-profile decision as director will likely be casting the new players introduced during the Quarter Quell. Tributes Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason are of special interest to fans, with casting speculation running rampant. (Unsurprisingly, we have a few suggestions for the hunk and the hottie too.) The caliber of actors Lawrence lines up will say plenty about the sort of sequel he plans to direct. In other words: Make it good, Francis!

Stronger CGI
If there was a chief complaint among fans regarding Ross' work on "The Hunger Games," it was that the Girl on Fire effects were largely lackluster. Lawrence has the opportunity to improve here, and with a brand-new, intricately designed arena, the helmer can create his own vision of the Games that's not reliant upon the precedent set by Ross.

Phone Famous Friends
T. Bone Burnett is one of the best scorers in the biz, and his sensibility helped set the dire tone of the dystopian drama, so we hope he'll sign back up for the sequel. But, as is often the case, director shakeups can lead to staffing shakeups, so if Burnett is no longer game, Lawrence should take advantage of his musically inclined mates from his days as a video director. Aren't you at least a tiny bit curious what a Lady Gaga-produced "Catching Fire" score would sound like?

We are hearing from bankers underwriting Facebook's initial public offering, that it will IPO at a $70 billion to $90 billion valuation, or $27-$35 a share.
