More

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ puts government grade encryption onto a flash drive for the masses, with 256 AES hardware based encryption for an extremely reasonable price ($14 street, 8GB). Also available in capacities of 4GB (price), 16GB (price) and 32GB (price), the drive offers strong encryption for personal and business use that is no more inconvenient than entering a password.

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) features a capless swivel design, with a metal cover that slides into place to protect the USB connector from dirt and pocket lint without the hassle of an easily misplaced cap. Measuring 0.5 by 4.2 by 5.5 inches (HWD), the drive is no larger than a pack of Wrigley's Gum, and weighs a mere 1.3 ounces.

The DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) uses two-zone encryption, allowing you to set up public and encrypted portions on the drive, allowing hassle free file access while still protecting your most sensitive data. The password set-up is simple, and protects all data from unauthorized access, with the drive automatically reformatting after 10 invalid password attempts.

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) offers data transfer rates of 10MB/sec (read) and 5MB/sec (write)?standard for USB 2.0 despite the use of hardware encryption, which often slows performance. Kingston backs the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) with a five-year warranty, and offers free 24/7 tech support.

Insight: Jobless voters could desert Obama at election (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? The slot machines jangle away with the promise of sudden riches, but many visitors to a job fair at a second-tier casino here are hoping merely for a minimum-wage job to snap their losing streak.

The grim economy hasn't been the only disappointment of the past several years for those hoping to find work with the limousine companies, insurance agencies and home healthcare providers that have set up shop at this career fair.

Ask Kimberly Howard who she voted for in 2008, and she glances sideways before confiding what appears to be a shameful secret. "Obama," she mutters.

It's not a choice she plans to repeat next year. She thinks perhaps Republicans will do a better job of fixing the economy. "I hope so. I'm praying so," she says quietly.

In order for Obama to win reelection next year, he will have to convince voters like Howard to give him another chance, particularly in battleground states with high unemployment like Nevada, which the president visited on Monday.

The unemployed, long an afterthought in political campaigns, could emerge as a surprise swing constituency next year. For decades, conventional wisdom was that the unemployed did not vote as much as those with jobs.

But new research based on the current economic slump shows a different picture. People who have lost their jobs are nearly twice as likely to switch support from incumbents, according to Andrew Healy, an economist at Loyola Marymount University.

Examining local layoff notices around the 2008 election, Healy found in an national study that 39 percent of the newly unemployed who had backed the incumbent party in the prior election switched their support to the opposition, compared with only 20 percent of other voters.

That helped Obama win Republican-leaning states like Indiana in 2008, but could put him on the defensive this time in states like Nevada and Michigan, where jobless households could make up a substantial portion of the electorate.

During the last two elections as the economy has stagnated, those who have lost their jobs have actually voted at a higher rate than the employed, according to national research being developed by Matthew Incantulpo, a graduate student at Princeton University.

UNHAPPY WITH STATUS QUO

He found that those who lost their jobs before the 2008 and 2010 elections had turnout rates roughly 7 percentage points higher than a control group of voters who lost their jobs shortly after the election. In 1996, when the economy was healthy, the newly unemployed had turnout rates 10 percentage points lower than the control group.

The economic downturn has hit especially hard among large swaths of the coalition that powered Obama to victory in 2008, and many of those voters could have a hard time squaring his promises of hope and change with their own struggles.

"I don't see any changes he's made that have been positive for people," Howard says as she fills out an application form. "He keeps saying 'more jobs, more jobs,' but I've been out of work for four months and I'm not seeing any improvement."

The shaky economy is expected to be the dominant issue in the November 2012 election. Those who have personal experience with job loss could make up a significantly larger chunk of the electorate than the official 9.1 percent unemployment rate would suggest.

In last year's congressional elections, a historic rout for Obama's Democrats, nearly one in three voters had experienced a job loss in their households, according to exit polls.

Next year's election could see a similar pattern as the jobless rate is projected to remain above 8 percent.

Obama aims to convince voters he is a better bet to boost the economy than his eventual Republican rival. Since September, he has been campaigning on his American Jobs Act, which has been blocked by Republicans in Congress.

"The President brought the economy back from the brink of another depression and he has fought for a fairer economy that rewards hard work and responsibility," said campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. "He is fighting every day to create jobs and restore economic security for the middle class."

That argument doesn't carry much weight with those at the job fair who backed Obama in 2008.

"He could have done a lot more from what he promised at the beginning and I just haven't seen it happen," says Augistin Zaragosa, 49. "The help that he gave us all a couple years ago, that was basically nothing."

LABOR UNIONS GET INVOLVED

Democrats' traditional allies in the labor movement are trying to mobilize the unemployed.

With the help of the Service Employees International Union, Linda Overby, an out-of-work painter in Las Vegas, has been organizing protests at the local offices of Republican lawmakers who oppose Obama's jobs bill.

Participation has grown as the protests have harnessed the anger many feel about Republican efforts to erode workers' rights, she said, and the Occupy Wall Street has helped to raise awareness as well.

"I am seeing people start to wake up," Overby said.

But increased activism does not necessarily equal increased support for Obama.

The International Association of Machinists counts 10,000 to 15,000 members in its Union of Unemployed, an effort to counteract the sense of isolation that can come with job loss and push for policies that would help those looking for work.

The group views Obama's jobs bill as a mixed bag, and an unscientific survey found widespread dissatisfaction with his presidency, even among Democrats.

"These folks are the swing voters of the next election cycle," said Rick Sloan, the group's executive director. "If they don't see any change in their lives, they're going to vote for a change."

Obama's bill would continue enhanced unemployment benefits in place since 2009 but that would do nothing for those who have been jobless for so long they have already exhausted them, Sloan said.

Sam Guy, a 24-year-old who hopes to find work in the insurance industry, said he hasn't decided how to vote next year. But his enthusiasm for Obama has waned. "I'm not rolling around with a bumper sticker this time," he said.

Netflix shares tank amid backlash and defections (AP)

NEW YORK ? Netflix shares plunged 35 percent Tuesday after the one-time Wall Street favorite revealed a massive departure of subscribers angered by price increases and other questionable changes at rental service that was created to make entertainment a snap.

Netflix revealed late Monday that it ended September with 23.8 million U.S. subscribers. That's down about 800,000 from June and worse than what the company had hinted at before. In September, the company predicted it will lose about 600,000 U.S. customers.

And it may get worse. Netflix said it expects more defections in coming months.

The exodus began after the company raised its prices by as much as 60 percent in July and split up its streaming and DVD rental services. Its website was flooded by comments from angry customers. Many people also canceled service, especially on the DVD-by-mail side. The company is betting that its future is in streaming video, and CEO Reed Hastings has said he expects Netflix's DVD subscriptions to steadily decline, much like what has happened to AOL Inc.'s dial-up Internet service.

But Netflix bungled a spin off its DVD-by-mail service, giving it the name Qwikster and creating separate accounts for people who wanted both DVDs and movie streaming. By doing so, the company created what many perceived to be a more complicated rental process at a company that began its meteoric rise with a new, easier way of searching for and finding entertainment effortlessly.

Netflix shares tumbled $41.34 to $77.50 in late morning trading Tuesday. The stock is down from more than $300 just 3 1/2 months ago. The last time the stock was trading so low was in April 2010, but that was during an extraordinarily steep ascent, after the company nearly erased the omnipresent blue and yellow storefronts of Blockbuster.

The revelations from Netflix prompted a downgrade to "Neutral" from "Buy" from Citi Investment Research analyst Mark Mahaney on Tuesday, who also slashed his target price on the stock to $95 from $220. The analyst called the price increase and the abandoned plan to separate Netflix's DVD business two "major execution errors."

Netflix Inc. did report better-than-expected financial results for the third quarter, but that was drowned out by the din of subscriber cancellations, expense controls and a one-time tax benefit, said Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

Pachter cut his target price to $82.50 from $110 on Netflix's stock and kept his rating at "Neutral."

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix said it does not comment on stock movement or analyst reports.

Can A Small Business Insurance Marketplace Take Root In Florida ...

You are here: Home / News / National News / Can A Small Business Insurance Marketplace Take Root In Florida?

October 24, 2011 at 7:14 PM by AHN ? ?

Tallahassee, FL, United States (KaiserHealth) ? Blossoms flower shop in downtown Tallahassee is just the kind of small business that Florida Health Choices, an online marketplace for insurance, hopes to serve.

Blossoms? owner, Jesica Parker, and director of operations, Lisa Metcalf, buy health insurance for themselves and their six employees from a not-for-profit HMO through a broker. The plan has good coverage with a low deductible and reasonable co-pays, but the cost of the premiums have gone up every year the small business has offered insurance.

?In the beginning when we first started offering it and we came around to our first couple of renewals, I was surprised at the increase annually in our premium,? Parker said. ?But now it?s something that we?ve come to expect and budget [for]. And now, 10 percent of our monthly budget goes to health insurance.?

Florida Health Choices was created in 2008 by the state legislature ? with the idea of promoting competition and transparency in the health insurance market to bring prices down for small businesses. But it is still not operational. It was set to open this past summer, but has been delayed as it continues to try to recruit health insurance companies to sign up and offer their products.

Health choices looks similar to the insurance exchanges that the federal health overhaul law says every state must create, but the Florida marketplace pre-dates the federal Affordable Care Act by two years, and the state has worked to distance it from its federal counterpart.

?I want to be real clear that we are not a health insurance exchange. That?s something that?s defined in the Affordable Care Act and we don?t even come close to meeting that definition,? said Florida Health Choices CEO Rose Naff. ?This is a voluntary market place. They don?t have to come and offer their products and services, and also it?s voluntary for employers and their employees.?

Health Choices will serve businesses with fewer than 50 employees, like Blossoms. And unlike the exchanges other states are working on now to comply with the health law, it has no subsidies to help anyone buy insurance. The plans it offers don?t have to guarantee a minimum level of coverage for consumers.

But for small businesses like Blossoms, it doesn?t matter what the system is called, it?s all about how it works and what kind of plans are being offered.

?Just because an exchange may be created, if the insurance companies involved in that exchange aren?t beneficial, affordable and have the adequate coverage to be beneficial to us and our employees, then the whole thing will be futile.? said Metcalf.

Napoli giving loaded Rangers some extra punch

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

updated 4:52 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2011

ARLINGTON, Texas - When Mike Napoli was playing for the other team, Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler had a serious dislike for him.

Sure, a lot of that had to do with Napoli playing for a division opponent the past five years before he became part of a World Series team in Texas.

There was also the way Napoli flipped his bat after hitting a home run or how the top button of his Angels jersey was often undone.

"I would never tell you last year I would probably enjoy having him in the clubhouse," Kinsler said. "You never know what his personality is until you meet a guy, but as far as the way he plays and uniform he wears, there's certain things that bothered me."

Not until Napoli joined the Rangers ? after being traded twice in five days last winter ? and had a breakout season to help Texas reach its second consecutive World Series.

"It's pretty simple to get along with him, and he's just a great guy to have around," Kinsler said.

"Yeah, I didn't like them, either," Napoli said. "That's just part of the sport-hate thing. You don't know people. Just coming over here, it's been amazing."

Watching Texas from the opposite side, Napoli saw a team that had a lot of fun and enjoyed the game. He also saw the Los Angeles Angels replaced as AL West champions by the Rangers last year when they went to their first World Series.

Napoli has fit right in with the loaded lineup for Texas, which plays the next three games of the World Series at home after a 2-1 victory at St. Louis in Game 2 evened the series at a game a piece. Game 3 is Saturday night at Rangers Ballpark.

"I knew coming over here was going to be fun," Napoli said. "I knew they had a great core of players and they were a winning ballclub, so I was excited to come over here and be part of it."

Texas fans have taken to chanting "Nap-o-li!, Nap-o-li!" when the former rival comes to bat at home during the playoffs. It worked the first time they did it in Game 2 of the AL division series, when Napoli kept fouling off pitches before hitting a tying two-run single in the rally that gave the Rangers their first victory over Tampa Bay.

"It was pretty nuts, unexpected," he said. "It was crazy, but now I like it.... I like hearing it. It's definitely a cool experience."

Like he did in the season opener for Texas nearly seven months ago, Napoli also homered in his first World Series game for the Rangers on Wednesday night.

The catcher has endured two bone-jarring collisions at the plate in the playoffs, including the eighth inning in Game 4 of the AL championship series in Detroit when Miguel Cabrera tried to bowl over him for the tiebreaking run. Napoli held on, then three innings later had a go-ahead RBI single before scoring on Nelson Cruz's second 11th-inning homer of that series.

"I call him a dirt bag," manager Ron Washington said. "He's a gamer, and he tries to do whatever it takes to help his team win."

In the clubhouse Friday, Napoli wore a "DirtBag" T-shirt sent to him by a music and clothing company with that name. A DirtBag banner hangs over the empty corner locker between he and Michael Young.

Rays manager Joe Maddon, familiar with the catcher from his days with the Angels, at one point during the ALDS declared "The Year of the Napoli." Along with his big hit in Game 2, Napoli had the go-ahead homer in Game 3.

Napoli spent the first five seasons of his career with the Angels, who traded him in January to Toronto. The first time Napoli actually heard from the Blue Jays was four days later when they told him he was going to Texas in exchange for reliever Frank Francisco.

Washington was all for the move when general manager Jon Daniels called to discuss Napoli's possible availability, even though it was unclear how the catcher-first baseman could be worked into the lineup. The Rangers had already signed catcher Yorvit Torrealba and had plans for Michael Young to play first base after signing All-Star third baseman Adrian Beltre.

"I said get him," Washington said. "We certainly needed to put another professional bat in our lineup, especially losing (Vladimir) Guerrero."

Napoli set career highs by hitting .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBIs in 113 games in the regular season. Of his starts, 57 were at catcher, 27 at first base and 18 as the designated hitter.

Since returning to the lineup July 4 after missing three weeks with a strained left oblique, Napoli has been one of the best hitters in the majors. He hit .378 with 20 homers and 50 RBIs over the last 67 regular-season games, and .302 with two homers through the first 12 postseason games.

Napoli, who turns 30 this winter, has established himself behind the plate working with Rangers pitchers and with his defensive play.

"I'm just glad that I can show I can get it done behind the plate. I kind of got the label to where I was just an offensive player and could hit for power, I really couldn't do it behind the plate," Napoli said. "But just coming over here, I settled in and got comfortable in my receiving and working with the pitchers. So I mean, I'm glad that I can show that I can get it done on both sides."

Google Mulls Buying Yahoo [REPORT] (Mashable)

Google is mulling purchasing Yahoo and has contacted at least two venture capital firms to help buy the company's core business, according to a report. Google and prospective partners have held discussions, but haven't put forth a formal proposal to buy the search giant, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited "a person familiar with the matter."

As the story notes, any such deal is likely to raise red flags among antitrust regulators. Google's not the only one rumored to be interested in buying the troubled Yahoo. Microsoft, which has a 10-year search deal with Yahoo, is also said to be interested.

What do you think? Would this be good or bad for the Internet economy? Let us know in the comments.

Estrogen works in the brain to keep weight in check, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? A recent UT Southwestern Medical Center study found that estrogen regulates energy expenditure, appetite and body weight, while insufficient estrogen receptors in specific parts of the brain may lead to obesity.

"Estrogen has a profound effect on metabolism," said Dr. Deborah Clegg, associate professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study published Oct. 5 in Cell Metabolism. "We hadn't previously thought of sex hormones as being critical regulators of food intake and body weight."

The mouse study is the first to show that estrogen, acting through two hypothalamic neural centers in the brain, keeps female body weight in check by regulating hunger and energy expenditure. Female mice lacking estrogen receptor alpha -- a molecule that sends estrogen signals to neurons -- in those parts of the brain became obese and developed related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Similar results were not seen in male mice, although researchers suspect other unknown estrogen receptor sites in the brain play a similar role in regulating metabolism for males as well.

Estrogen receptors are located throughout the body, but researchers found two specific populations of estrogen receptors that appear to regulate energy balance for female mice.

The findings are potentially important for millions of postmenopausal women, many of whom have decided against hormonal replacement therapy. The study could lead to new hormonal replacement therapies in which estrogen is delivered to specific parts of the brain that regulate body weight, thereby avoiding the risks associated with full-body estrogen delivery, such as breast cancer and stroke.

Doctors stopped routinely recommending long-term estrogen therapy for menopausal women in 2002 when a Women's Health Initiative study showed the hormone also led to increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

"The role of estrogen in postmenopausal women continues to remain uncertain," Dr. Clegg said. "Current research is focused on the timing and the type of estrogen supplementation that would be most beneficial to women. Our findings further support a role for estrogens in regulating body weight and energy expenditure, suggesting a benefit of estrogen supplementation in postmenopausal women."

Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study included lead author Dr. Yong Xu, a former postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Clegg's lab; Dr. Carol Elias, assistant professor of internal medicine; and Dr. Joel Elmquist, professor of internal medicine.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

(AP) ? Microsoft's Windows franchise regained some of its vigor during the company's latest quarter, but that might not be enough to overcome the perception that the world's largest software maker is being outmaneuvered by nimble rivals whose fortunes aren't tied to the personal computer.

The results released Thursday were highlighted by a 7 percent increase in revenue that exceeded analyst estimates. The gains for the July-September period occurred throughout Microsoft's product lineup, which includes the ubiquitous Windows operating system, widely used programs such as Office, the Xbox 360 video game console and the Bing search engine.

The company's earnings for the fiscal first quarter rose 6 percent from last year to match analyst projections.

Investors weren't impressed. Microsoft shares dipped 19 cents to $26.85 in Thursday's extended trading.

Microsoft's stock price has been held back by worries that it isn't adapting quickly enough as more people use smartphones and computer tablets such as Apple's iPad instead of desktop and laptop computers that run on the Windows operating system. Three consecutive quarters in declining Windows revenue reinforced those concerns.

That slump ended in the latest quarter as revenue in the Windows division crept up nearly 2 percent to $4.87 billion. The modest gain was slightly below the 3.2 percent to 3.6 percent rise in personal computer shipments during the quarter, based on estimates by Gartner Inc. and IDC.

Meanwhile, Apple sold more than 11 million iPads during the same period, more than doubling the number from the same time last year.

Most analysts believe sales of iPad and other computer tablets are going to keep accelerating at a rapid rate for the next several years. The trend is expected to decrease demand for PCs in households and businesses. In a Thursday conference call, Microsoft executives acknowledged the growing popularity of tablets will keep the pressure on the Windows division.

Microsoft is tackling the problem with the most radical overhaul of Windows since the mid-1990s. The next version, called Windows 8, will run on touch-screen devices. The redesigned system generated a positive buzz when it was released to developers, but the software isn't expected to hit the mass market until the middle of next year, at the earliest. Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington, hasn't specified a timetable.

In the most recent quarter, Microsoft Corp. earned $5.7 billion, or 68 cents per share, for its fiscal first quarter. That compared with net income of $5.4 billion, or 62 cents per share, at the same time last year. The earnings matched the average estimate among analyst surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue increased totaled $17.37 billion ? about $130 million above analyst forecasts. At the same time last year, Microsoft's revenue came in at $16.2 billion.

By surpassing Wall Street's revenue hurdle, Microsoft achieved something that eluded nemesis Apple Inc. during the same period.

Although Apple's revenue in the most recent quarter surged 39 percent from last year, the increase didn't measure up to analyst expectations. The shortfall triggered a sharp drop in Apple's stock price.

Microsoft's challenges extend beyond Windows. The company has been struggling for years to catch up to Google Inc. in the lucrative search advertising market. It's been an exercise in frustration so far, saddling Microsoft's online division with operating losses totaling $6.5 billion in the company's last three fiscal years. The division's sustained another loss of $494 million in the latest quarter, down from $558 million at the same time last year. Online revenue rose 19 percent to $625 million.

Executives assured analysts in Thursday's conference call that they're determined to keep whittling the online division's losses. To do that, Microsoft will likely have to fine tune its Internet search partnership with Yahoo Inc. Since Yahoo began relying on Microsoft's technology for search results, the alliance has not been making as much money as the companies anticipated. The problems prompted Microsoft to extend a revenue guarantee through March 2013 ? a year beyond the original deadline.

Microsoft is also counting on its just-completed $8.5 billion acquisition of video chat service Skype to make its online services more compelling in social networking and digital video.

(AP) ? Union Pacific Corp., the nation's largest railroad, said Thursday its third-quarter earnings rose 16 percent as higher prices offset slower growth in shipments and higher fuel costs.

The nation's largest railroad also said it expects its business to continue to grow despite an uncertain view for the broader U.S. economy.

The Omaha, Neb., company earned $904 million, or $1.85 per share between June and September. That's up from $778 million, or $1.56 per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 16 percent to $5.1 billion. Fuel prices jumped 42 percent in the three-month period, while total operating expenses rose 17 percent. Severe heat and extended drought conditions in Texas damaged large sections of track during the summer.

FactSet says analysts predicted a profit of $1.81 per share on revenue of $5.03 billion.

Shipping volume grew 1 percent in the period. The volume of cars and car parts transferred on its lines grew the most of any category, rising 10 percent. Shipments of agricultural products and intermodal goods both fell. Intermodal shipments are those that are transferred between trains and another method of transportation, like trucks or ships. Those shipments are mostly made up of consumer products, so they're vulnerable to swings in Americans' buying habits.

Revenue increased in all six shipping categories as the railroad charged more for its services. Higher shipping prices can trickle down to consumers because transportation costs are among the largest expenses for retailers. Railroads carry many goods consumers rely on every day, including coal for electricity, food and a variety of goods shipped in from overseas like televisions and electronic gadgets.

Obama basks in Southern hospitality on bus tour

(AP) ? For President Barack Obama, the bus is back.

That's the sleek, million-dollar, Secret Service-approved bus that's been carrying Obama along North Carolina's winding mountain roads, giving the president a chance to take in the fall foliage and bask in some small-town Southern hospitality.

"Saw the mountains, saw some lakes, saw all the wonderful people in this part of the country," Obama said Monday during a speech in rural Millers Creek.

"Even the folks who don't vote for me are nice," he added.

At the heart of Obama's three-day bus trip through North Carolina and Virginia is a sales pitch for elements in the jobs bill he wants Congress to pass.

But the president is also selling himself, an incumbent candidate running for re-election, trying to re-energize voters whose enthusiasm may have waned. That's particularly important in North Carolina, a state Obama wrested from Republicans in 2008, but which could slip out of his grasp next November.

To try to recapture some of his electoral appeal, Obama turned to campaign staples: barbecue, babies and barrels of candy.

Obama spent more than four hours Monday driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains, which were bright with red and orange fall leaves. The president stopped off in Marion, population 8,075, for lunch at Countryside Barbeque. The president ordered at the counter ? he got the barbecue platter and sweet tea ? then spent more than half an hour shaking hands and having his picture taken with the lunchtime crowd.

The tech-savvy president even helped one woman figure out how to take a photo on her smartphone.

Obama had a close encounter with one baby boy: "I think you got some biscuit on me," the president said as he handed the child back to his mother.

And he made personal appeals for his economic policies, telling one table of local businessmen about his call for $50 billion more in new infrastructure spending. He said, "We're going to have to do it eventually, so why not do it now?"

Obama's unscheduled stops aren't wholly impromptu. White House staffers typically scope out areas in advance and Secret Service officers arrive well ahead of the president.

But they're about as spontaneous as it gets for the president, and afford him the freedom of personal, retail politics that's often missing in the highly scripted White House.

Obama's bus, as well as the staff and press vans that followed behind, passed crowds of people lined up on the sidewalks of small towns and residents sitting on lawn chairs in their front yards. A group of schoolchildren gathered outside their classrooms, waving small American flags. A man pulled his car over to the side of the road and saluted as the commander-in-chief sped by.

One woman held a sign reading "We believe. We voted. Now What?" That message underscored the challenge Obama faces as he seeks to rally his supporters ahead of next November's election.

Key to Obama's 2008 success in North Carolina was his campaign's ability to boost voter turnout among young people. And there were plenty of them in Boone, home to Appalachian State University, when Obama stopped Monday for a shopping trip at Mast General Store.

The store was filled with barrels of candy, which Obama started grabbing by the handful ? to help the White House prepare for Halloween, he said.

"On Halloween, the first lady doesn't mind," Obama said of his health-conscious wife.

Day two of Obama's bus trip was to start at a community college near Greensboro and end in Hampton, Va. Hours of drive time was scheduled in between, giving Obama plenty more chances for unscheduled stops.

    Rangers?are AL's new super power

ARLINGTON, Texas -- While the Red Sox sort through their institutional dysfunction and the Yankees lick their wounds and weigh their options after a first-round exit, an interesting development has taken root in the American League.
    ???
The Texas Rangers have become the AL's third super power.
    ???
The Rangers dusted the pesky Detroit Tigers, 15-5, in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series and advance to the World Series for the second straight year.
    ???
That doesn't exactly put them in the dynasty category, but consider this: the Rangers are the first team in a decade to win back-to back American League pennants.
    ???
And if that hasn't caught the attention of the Yankees and Red Sox, it should.
    ???
"I think it's hard to repeat,'' said club president Nolan Ryan, "and when you look at our ballclub, with the young talent we have and the balance that we have . . . Are we elite? I don't know. But I'll say this: I think we're as good a ballclub as there is.''
    ???
Over the last few seasons, the Rangers have become an effective and efficient organization. General manager Jon Daniels has emerged as one of the game's top executives and a stabilized ownership group has provided him with the necessary resources.
    ???
The Rangers aren't about to spend dollar-for-dollar with the Red Sox and Yankees, with a 2011 payroll of $92 million, good for 13th among the 30 MLB clubs. But remember: They were willing to hand out more than $100 million to retain Cliff Lee last winter.
    ???
There's room to grow with that payroll, too. The Rangers' new local TV deal, worth nearly $3 billion, doesn't even kick in until 2015. That might not rival the revenues generated by the Yankees' YES Network or the Red Sox' NESN, but it will do.
    ???
(It's worth noting that the among all 30 teams, the Rangers play in the second-biggest unshared TV market.)
    ????
It might not even be enough for the Rangers to be players for the super-elite free agents such as Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, but as the Red Sox and Yankees know all too well, that can be a dangerous neighborhood in which to work. The Rangers learned that first-hand with their $252 million contract for Alex Rodriguez.
    ????
Besides, these Rangers weren't built on big-dollar free agents. They've won consecutive divisions and pennants thanks to homegrown talent (Ian Kinsler, Derek Holland, Alexi Ogando, C.J. Wilson, Michael Young), shrewd trades (Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli, Nelson Cruz, David Murphy) and smart free agent signings (Adrian Beltre, Colby Lewis).
    ????
But the real foundation of the team came in a huge deal by Daniels in 2007 in which the Rangers traded Mark Teixeira to the Atlanta Braves and got shortstop Elvis Andrus, starter Matt Harrison, closer Neftali Feliz and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia in exchange.
    ????
The Texas farm system is well-regarded and was in the top half of all organizations last May by Baseball American, an achievement considering how many players the system has graduated in recent seasons, plus the four players they had to sacrifice to get Lee from Seattle in the middle of 2010.
    ????
The Rangers are in it for the long haul. And they've won as many pennants as the Yankees and Red Sox combined in the last six seasons.
    ????
The Super Two now have company.
    ????
Not that the Rangers feel their work is done. Reminded that his team had just become the first team to back-to-back A.L. pennants since the Yankees of 1998-2001, Daniels kept his perspective.
    ????
"I think the other teams that did it won the World Series,'' he said, ''so I think we've still got a pretty big step ahead of us before we can put ourselves in that group.''
    ????
It's even more incredible when you consider that, until the Rangers beat Tampa Bay in the Division Series a year ago October, they had won exactly one (1) postseason game in their history and had never won a playoff series. Now, they've won four of their last five.
    ????
Throw in the fact that the Rangers were literally auctioned to the highest bidder in the summer of 2010 and their journey is all the more remarkable.
    ????
Now, the Rangers are headed for the World Series again. And just in case the Red Sox and Yankees have been preoccupied surveying their own damage, they're not going anyway anytime soon.

Don?t try this at home (The Newsroom)

Spider-Man has nothing on a thrifty Chinese woman named Ma Jei.

Recently, Ma Jei decided she wanted to take a tour of a nearby tourist attraction, Zhonghau Castle, in eastern China. To avoid paying the $3.90 admission fee (there's a global recession going on, people), Ma Jei clambered up the castle wall to get in.

The 70-foot high castle wall. No ropes. No chalk. No safety harness. (Did we mention that the castle wall is 70 FEET HIGH?)

In fact, she made it look so easy that a couple of other tourists tried to follow her lead, which resulted in several broken legs and police rescues. Later, Ma Jei admitted that she had climbed the wall successfully many times in the past, to get around the admission fee.

Don't try this at home, kids.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

(AP) ? A Florida man was charged with hacking into celebrity email accounts in a computer invasion scheme that led to the posting of private and revealing information, including nude photos of actress Scarlett Johansson, on the Internet, federal authorities said Wednesday.

Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, was arrested without incident as part of a yearlong investigation of celebrity hacking that authorities dubbed "Operation Hackerazzi."

There were more than 50 victims in the case, including Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and actress Renee Olstead, authorities said. Others were named only by initials and investigators wouldn't disclose if they were famous, but said victims named in the indictment agreed to have their identities made public.

"It helps get out the message that cyber-hacking is a real threat," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte said of the case, describing those who engage in such activity as "scum."

Chaney made his initial court appearance in a Florida courtroom Wednesday and was released on $10,000 bond. He was charged with 26 counts of identity theft, unauthorized access to a protected computer and wiretapping. If convicted, he faces up to 121 years in prison. An email left for Assistant Federal Public Defender Maurice Grant II was not immediately returned.

Celebrities and people in the news have long been targets of privacy invasion but concerns have redoubled in the Internet age.

In Britain, publisher Rupert Murdoch closed down the News of the World this year after contentions that the tabloid routinely hacked into people's phones in the hunt for exclusive stories. The paper, which had published for 168 years, faced allegations of systematically intercepting private voicemail of those in the news ? including a teenage murder victim.

Authorities said Chaney was responsible for stealing nude photos taken by Johansson herself and were later posted on the Internet. Chaney offered some material to celebrity blog sites but there is no evidence that he profited from his scheme, said Steven Martinez, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles office.

"Celebrity information is highly marketable," said Martinez, who added his office continues to receive complaints about celebrities' having their personal information breached.

Representatives for Johansson, Kunis and Aguilera did not immediately respond to calls and emails seeking comment.

Chaney hacked Google, Apple and Yahoo email accounts beginning last November through February, then hijacked the forwarding feature so that a copy of every email received was sent, "virtually instantaneously," to an email account he controlled, according to an indictment handed up Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles.

He allegedly used the hacker names "trainreqsuckswhat," ''anonygrrl" and "jaxjaguars911," and also used the victims' identities to illegally access and control computers. Chaney is accused of damaging email servers that caused losses of at least $5,000 per instance.

Authorities wouldn't say whether Chaney was able to access email accounts via cell phones, but he was able to figure out secure passwords to various celebrity accounts through information that had been made public.

Chaney "mined through publicly available data and figured out passwords and security questions," Martinez said.

A message seeking comment was left on an answering machine for a Christopher Chaney in Jacksonville. There was no answer at a telephone listing for another Christopher Chaney.

Investigators said they hoped the celebrity-infused case will jumpstart those who don't value online security enough to protect their personal information and create more secure passwords that can't be easily figured out by would-be hackers.

"Taking these steps will go a long way in protecting yourself from the financial and emotional costs of having someone intrude on your private life and potentially steal your identity," Birotte said.
